The Top 5 Attributes Of A Leading IT Support Company

As we progress through the era now defined by computers, computer networks have increased exponentially in their size and importance to business. Where once a sophisticated network was three computers connected together with a hub, we now have complex setups of core, access and distribution layered switching and powerful routers capable of handling the huge amounts of voice, video and data traffic that is now required to run a thriving business.
The biggest challenges for businesses then are that they often lack the expertise in house to manage this complex network. Businesses that have been around for over 20 – 30 years realize the value of IT and networks, as does any business owner worth his salt, but many are reluctant to provide the funding and focus that the network, once a non-existent cost, it now deserves. Without spending big money on in-house expertise, it now makes sense to outsource the handling of the computers and IT support to a professional IT firm. But who to choose, we believe, is a huge challenge facing small and mid-sized businesses.
Key challenges that will affect businesses when outsourcing their IT are as follows:

  • Customer service – We think this is the most important. Internally, employees are accountable, accessible and most importantly, visible. Just about every company out there knows how to fix common network issues, but the level of service you receive when you outsource varies greatly. Do you receive a ticket from a machine and wait forever for an actual human to pick up the case? Often this type of system saves the IT company time, but can cause a good deal of frustration for you. You want to speak to someone while the issue is fresh. Make sure you can get on the phone directly to your engineer when needed, as if they were an employee of yours.
  • Vendor certifications: judging a business simply on a meeting with one or two of the representatives isn’t a comprehensive method to choose an IT services provider. Check the certifications the company has received from the leading vendors, as this is the best indication you can use to judge the competency of the business.
  • Remote monitoring: No longer the sole province of large enterprise, remote monitoring and maintenance services are pushing down into the SMB space. While remote monitoring solutions are often sold as managed services it is a must that there is at least some up/down notification in place by you IT support provider.
  • Account managers: Having a single point of contact through which to direct all your enquiries will save you time and help you to build up trust in a provider. Make sure you will receive an account manager. Get to know them well, buy them presents and praise them constantly.

This all sounds hard, but once a good decision is made you’ll finally be able to focus on your business, not your network, or take the work out of network, or any one of the other clever slogans that essentially point to you being able to do what you do best, and ignoring the rest.

The Origin of Computers

Early History
The exact date of the invention of computers is difficult to pin down. Consider that the discovery of computers was originally linked to devices that were used to calculate:
. abacus
. slide rule
. comptometers
. key punch key to disk systems

Computer Evolution
Later, devices were used for data collection in astronomy and as the industrial age dawned for mechanical equipment to increase production. By the middle 1940′s, development of what is recognized as a “computer” used binary and decimal numerical systems to “compute”, though not all were programmable logic controlled. Beginning in Germany with Zuse’s “Z” machines in 1941, and EDSAC, which introduced development of memory storage, the US military developed “ENIAC”, one of the first computers with new design that included memory storage. ENIAC could be considered the first computer similar to today’s computers.

Computers Develop With New Technology
By the 1970′s computers evolved from vacuum tube technology to microprocessor circuitry. Hardware for computers grew smaller in size and required less space than original room-sized computers. As computers evolved, so did programmability and program languages. Fortran, a language that was used in the 1970′s to transfer data to magnetic cards (mag card) facilitated the ease of faster data collection. Another computer program language used largely in the scientific fields was Pascal. Gradually by the late 1980′s, computers and the program languages grew in sophistication. A computer’s ability to store vast amounts of data created the development for larger computer memory storage up to the present gigabytes and terrabytes.

Harnessing the Power of Computer Technology
From room-sized, towering pieces of computing equipment to today’s tiny all-purpose cell phones and personal assistant devices, the discovery of computers harnessed powerful computer technology advancing virtual reality devices used for medical, military and scientific advancements that appear limitless. The discovery of computers also advanced communication by the creation of the internet. Its also boosted one significant branch of industry called web design belfast.

Plastic lanyards

orderlanyards.comEveryone remembers seeing lifeguards with lanyards when they were kids. It seems that all of lifeguards either carried a lanyard with a key or two on the end or had it looped around their necks. Lanyards just looked like part of the lifeguard uniform.
Lanyards constructed with plastic are the best ones to use where there’s an opportunity for them to get wet. Lanyards made of fabric of one sort or another won’t fall apart if they get a good soaking but the continual dampness will take its toll. Materials other than plastic are hard to clean, can harbor mold and mildew, and generally become smelly and stained. Plastic will look as good as new if its cared for.
Indoor pools are the lifeguard’s domain and the plastic lanyard is pretty much standard issued equipment. When the chlorine and the humidity start to cloud up the plastic, a damp cloth and some window cleaner or strong dish soap will clean it up nicely.
Plastic lanyards come in a variety of colors and with any number of designs. It’s possible to color coordinate a bathing suit and a lanyard to accommodate the conservative swimmers or to get a lanyard with wild colors and designs that will please the younger crowd. As long as it’s plastic, you’re in business.
Salt water will be hard on any lanyard, plastic or not. The lanyard will require constant wiping down to avoid pitting and staining. Sand is another enemy of plastic that will scratch the lanyard and ruin its appearance if you’re not careful.
Inland lakes and rivers won’t hurt the lanyard a bit. The green algae might threaten to stain it but that’s where the window cleaner and soap can cut the scum and restore your lanyard’s appearance.
Plastic eventually wears out so when you find a lanyard that suits your fancy, consider buying several so you’ll always have a backup or two. Lanyards are long enough that they’re tough to lose but it does happen, especially in public areas like a beach or a pool.
Lanyards and lifeguards still go together. Our children will remember the lifeguards swinging their lanyards like the ones did when we were kids. As long as the lanyards are plastic, their memories will preserve the images of bright colors and great-looking designs.

In the heart of an atom

In the heart of an atom, there lies the tiniest and yet most powerful blob in the universe. This blob is called the nucleus. The discovery of the nucleus was quite unexpected. Ernest Rutherford, in an attempt to know more about atoms, put together the alpha-gold foil experiment. In this experiment, a thin gold foil (that would be a few atoms thick) will be bombarded with positively charged beams (alpha-rays). Most of the beams passed through the gold foil, making Rutherford believe that the atom is mostly empty space. The most exciting part of the experiment, however, was the few beams that got deflected and bounced back. These beams hit something solid and positively charged. It was the nucleus.

The nucleus is not just the central part of the atom. The nucleus can be viewed as the heart of the atom. It contains two of the three subatomic particles: protons and neutrons. The protons are positively charged and the number of protons identify the atom. For example, if there are six protons in the nucleus, the atom cannot be anything else but carbon. The neutrons, on the other hand, have no charge but it does have a mass that is almost equal to that of the proton. Together, the protons and neutrons make up the mass of an atom. The mass of the third subatomic particle, the electron, is insignificant and many atoms can easily remove electrons during chemical reactions.

Then, as quantum physics developed, scientists discovered that the heart of the atom has more than protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are just types of hadrons, which are the heavy elementary particles that are made of three quarks. Strong attractive forces, perhaps the strongest in the universe, hold together the hadrons and other elementary particles (mesons and baryons) within the atom’s nucleus.

We’d like to thank Miss Sue Lang on this contribution to our web page.

Pulsar Stars

A Pulsar is a type of star which seem to emit bursts of electromagnetic radiation (or pulses) at a fairly regular interval. All Pulsars are neutron stars, which means that they are the left-overs of a massive star that has undergone supernova or has collapsed onto itself from its own mass. In addition to being super dense, what separates Pulsars from other star types is that they rotate. This rotation period is what causes us to see them as pulsing beacons, much like a lighthouse. We are only able to see the beam of radiation that they send out when that beam is rotated towards the Earth.

Pulsars were first discovered in 1967, by a female Ph. D student at Cambridge named Jocelyn Bell. She noticed a regular burst of energy in a part of the Crab Nebula when using the observatory’s radio telescope. At first, she and her supervisor, Doctor Anthony Hewish, were completely unable to guess what was causing the energy burst, so they named the event “LGM 1″ for “Little Green Man,” jokingly pretending that it was caused by an extra-terrestrial civilization. However, neither of them seriously believed that this was the case.

Doctor Hewish would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974, but controversially Jocelyn Bell was not named in it.

Pulsars have had many practical applications in the study of our Universe, and have helped to confirm Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and the discovery of extra-solar planetary systems. However, despite their great use, there is still much that scientists do not understand about them.

How to choose the right hosting

When you have to choose the right hosting for a Web site, the options are plenty, but advice is rare. This article will help you understand how to choose the right hosting.

- What should I look for in choosing the right Web host?
Choosing the right Web host depends on your needs. Hosts can charge for file space, traffic, or both. Some host a flat fee and then charge additional fees based on usage.

Consider your needs and look at what hosts provide to you. If you expect heavy traffic but have a small and efficient site, you might choose hosting that charges for file space instead of traffic. If you have a massive site with limited visitors, such as an employee training site, consider payment plans that emphasize traffic.

- Considering speed in Web hosting
Choosing the right hosting will depend on your needs. Small sites may not need lightning-fast speeds, while a site driven by flash, video or heavy processing would. Customers lose patience quickly with a site that doesn’t load, so even a 7-second lag can lose clients. You might pay more to emphasize speed on a sales site. Compare the speeds in each package. If speed is crucial, don’t skimp!

- Choose reliable hosting
Waiting for a Web site can drive customers away, even worse is having no Web site at all. Check how often a host has downtime and how they compensate clients. Many hosts will mirror your site so there’s no disruption in service. Others will offer discounts. Some do nothing – avoid them! You don’t buy pizza when the pizza place is closed. You shouldn’t have to pay for Web hosting that doesn’t host, either.

Now you have the information you need to choose the right hosting for your site.
