5 Tips to Choosing a Domain Name

One of the most important things you must do when creating a website for your business is secure a good domain name for the site. There are a few things you must keep in mind if you want to select a domain that will get you recognized on the web.

1. Be as brand specific as possible when you select your name. As an example, if you sell widgets you want to base your site name on widgets. What you do not want to do is name the site something that is irrelevant to the product or service.

2. Avoid misspellings or unique spellings of words if at all possible. While you may automatically think of a word as spelt a certain way, you are ostracizing clients that do not think to add the extra "z" in a word or spell it in slang.

3. Avoid hyphens and underscores. There is probably nothing harder to describe, or remember, than a site that has one of these marks in its domain name. People who are in a hurry often get these two marks confused. Failure to have a clear domain name will send people to sites other than you own.

4. Keep the name short. When you select a name that has many letters, words and ideas incorporated into the name you risk typos by your clients. This is a "quick fix" society with a very short attention span. If your site name is miss keyed and another site pops up, people are prone to move on instead of finding their mistake.

5. Try to stay with a .com ending to your site. While there are several endings that can be used on the internet, .com is associated with being a "prime" site. There are many misconceptions about .net and .org. It is better to go with the flow of this thinking than fight the system and loose clicks.

The main thing to remember when you are establishing a site is that you want to create a brand name for your product or service. If the site name is not currently available don't panic. There are many unique business names for sale on the internet and you will be able to secure a name that will ensure your success.
